It is inevitable that we will all experience Bereavement, Grief and Loss at some point in our lives. There’s no time limit to it and it can sneak up on you when you are least expecting it.

You may have experienced more than one type of loss and cumulatively it can impact you in different ways.

As a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, Karen specialises in Bereavement, Grief and Loss. She understands how challenging it can be to manage life after loss. When we think of loss, usually the loss of a loved one comes to mind however, there are many different types of loss:

  • Loss of a loved one

  • Loss of your future self, hopes and dreams

  • Loss of a relationship

  • Loss of a job

  • Loss of a pet

  • Loss of identity/sense of self

  • Loss of pregnancy or infertility

  • Loss of home or possessions

Types Of Grief

There are different types of grief:

Anticipatory Grief – This relates to the feelings of grief that occur before an impending loss, such as the death of a loved one due to a terminal illness, an anticipated job loss or divorce.

Delayed Grief – This occurs when the emotional processing of a loss is significantly delayed by days, weeks or months after the event. This can happen where the loss was unexpected and therefore a shock or when someone puts the needs of others before themselves.

Complicated Grief – This is where persistent and intense symptoms of grief are experienced that impact on daily life, which lasts beyond six months after a loss.

Cumulative Grief – This occurs when a person experiences multiple losses within a short space of time or where a previous loss wasn’t addressed before the next one happens.

Emotions Associated With Grief
